Porsche 911 Turbo S (992) Full Front-End XPEL Ultimate Plus PPF in Hawthorne
A black Porsche 911 Turbo S is one of the most striking cars you can put on a Los Angeles freeway. It is also one of the most vulnerable. This 992-generation Turbo S came to our Hawthorne studio for a full front-end XPEL Ultimate Plus paint protection film (PPF) installation, and it is a perfect example of why the front of a high-performance car needs protecting before the first freeway miles, not after.
Anyone who drives the 405, the 105, or the 110 knows what Southern California roads throw at a car. Construction zones shed gravel, trucks heading to and from LAX and the ports kick up debris, and stop-and-go traffic keeps you close behind vehicles that spray grit at bumper height. Head down Pacific Coast Highway from Santa Monica through Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach, all the way to Orange County, and you add sand and salt air to the mix. Not something car paint finishes love.
The 992 Turbo S makes the problem worse simply by being what it is: the nose sits low, the front bumper is dominated by large cooling intakes, and the adaptive front spoiler deploys at speed, placing more painted surface directly in the line of fire. With 640 hp (650 PS) on tap, this isn’t a car that spends its life at low, dull speeds. And in essence, higher speeds mean harder impacts, and a single rock chip on the hood can mean a respray that never quite matches factory paint. Not something you’ll want to see on your $150k sports car. That’s for sure.
The Paint: Why Black Porsche Finishes Need Extra Care
Black is the least forgiving color in the Porsche palette. Every swirl mark, wash scratch, and chip shows up under direct sun, and the deep gloss that makes black so appealing also turns every imperfection into a highlight. The 911 body adds complexity: the sweeping front fenders, the compound curves around the headlights, and the tight transitions near the intakes are difficult to wrap cleanly.
That is why preparation matters as much as the film itself. Before installation, the paint was decontaminated and corrected to remove defects so they wouldn’t be sealed under the film. Edges were wrapped wherever the panel design allowed, giving a near-invisible finish with no visible film lines at normal viewing distance.
XPEL Ultimate Plus: The Technical Side
XPEL Ultimate Plus is a thermoplastic polyurethane film roughly 8 mils thick, optically clear, and built to absorb the impacts that would otherwise chip paint. Its self-healing topcoat lets light swirls and wash marks disappear with heat from the sun or warm water, which is especially valuable on black paint. The film also resists staining from bug splatter, bird droppings, and road tar, and it will not yellow under the intense Southern California sun.
XPEL backs Ultimate Plus with a 10-year manufacturer warranty covering yellowing, cracking, blistering, and delamination. As an XPEL-certified installer, we use precision patterns and hand finishing to fit the film exactly to the 992’s bodywork.
Our full front-end package covers the front bumper, full hood, both front fenders, side mirrors, and headlights. Covering full panels instead of partial strips means no visible line across the middle of the hood and complete protection for the areas that take the most punishment.
